Kybella is a chemical solution that has been approved by the FDA to dissolve hard-to-treat fat deposits that form underneath the chin. The product contains deoxycholic acid, a naturally-occurring substance that helps dissolve fatty tissue so it can be removed by the body's own waste disposal system. For many patients, Kybella can be a great alternative to liposuction or other procedures designed to remove stubborn pockets of fat.
The special fat treatment solution works by dissolving the structure of fat cells, breaking down the cell walls so fatty deposits can be eliminate naturally. Kybella treatment should only be provided by a skilled physician to ensure it targets only the fat cells to avoid possible complications.
Kybella has only received FDA approval for use in eliminating fat deposits under the chin causing a double chin, and isn't designed for use in large deposits of fat, such as the belly, thighs or “love handles.”
Kybella uses a fine needle to inject multiple areas of fat underneath the chin (the submental region) for the most consistent results. The number of injections you'll need will depend on how much fat needs to be removed. While results can be seen after a single session, some patients with significant fatty deposits will benefit from a series of up to six sessions spaced several weeks apart. Each session takes about 15 to 20 minutes to complete, and afterward, you can return to your regular activities. You may have some redness, tenderness and mild swelling at the injection sites, all of which will quickly resolve.
Most patients see results a few weeks after treatment once the body's waste disposal system has removed the dissolved fat. Like liposuction, Kybella removes the fat cells permanently.
Coolsculpting® is a procedure that uses proprietary cooling technology to eliminate fat cells by freezing them. The Coolsculpting® technique eliminates the need for invasive surgeries and can be an ideal choice for treating stubborn pockets of fat that can't be eliminated with diet and exercise, including the “love handles” and fat deposits on the thighs and belly.
Coolsculpting® technology focuses on fat cells and delivers precise amounts of cooling energy to freeze cells, resulting in crystallization and eventual cell death. Once the fat cells die, the body removes them via its natural waste removal system and patients are left with a smoother, firmer appearance.
Absolutely. Coolsculpting® is based on techniques developed by doctors at Massachusetts General Hospital, a hospital affiliated with Harvard Medical School. It's the only technique approved by the FDA to remove fat cells using cooling techniques.
After the treatment zones have been determined, the Coolsculpting® handheld device is positioned over your skin where it will deliver controlled bursts of cooling energy. Energy bursts are delivered briefly for specific amounts of time determined by the amount of fat that's being removed and the area of your body where treatment is occurring. During treatment, you may experience feelings of pressure as the device is held against your skin, accompanied by brief sensations of coolness. Coolsculpting® is performed on an outpatient basis with no downtime.
While you'll see results after a single treatment once the dead fat cells are removed by your body, most patients benefit from a series of treatments for enhanced results. The number of sessions you'll need to achieve optimal results depends on the extent of treatment, the area being treated and your personal treatment goals.
