Laser Treatment Q & A

How are lasers used in cosmetic treatments?

In recent years, lasers have emerged as among the most versatile treatments for patients seeking to remedy a broad array of cosmetic issues. Today, lasers are used to:

  • permanently remove hair

  • reduce the appearance of lines and wrinkles

  • reduce the appearance of scars

  • improve skin tone and texture

  • remove tattoos

  • reduce the appearance of discolorations, including melasma and age spots

  • tone and tighten loose, lax skin

Many patients choose to have laser treatments performed in conjunction with other types of treatments, like fillers or Botox®, to achieve results that can provide an all-over more youthful appearance without the need for a traditional – and much more costly and invasive – facelift.

What happens during laser treatment?

In most cases prior to treatment, you'll be given protective eyewear to shield your eyes from the intensely bright light of the laser. A topical anesthetic may be applied in some cases; in other cases, the laser itself may provide cooling with a special mist. The laser device is embedded in a handheld device that will be passed over your skin to enable the focused energy to penetrate to the desired depth. Different types of lasers and different amounts of energy may be used for different applications to achieve the best results. Depending on the type of treatment you have, a cooling gel may be applied to the skin afterward to minimize any potential discomfort and to promote healing.

What is Intese Pulsed Light Therapy?

IPL, or intense pulsed light therapy, uses the power of specially-designed lasers to remove dull, dead upper layers of skin to help restore a youthful glow, improve the texture of skin, and reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles, as well as treat areas of discoloration including age spots. IPL can be used on the face, hands, neck and chest to remove age spots and help skin look and feel smoother, firmer and more toned. IPL treatments are performed on an outpatient basis and can be customized for your skin type and the issues you want to have addressed.

What will I feel like after treatment?

Once your treatment is complete, your skin may appear red for a day or two, with deeper treatments associated with more redness and sometimes mild swelling. Some treatments will result in mild peeling of your skin within a few days, revealing the smoother, fresher skin underneath. Your skin will continue to improve in texture and tone as new collagen forms during the next few weeks.
